Beginning his seventh overall season, Head Coach Joe Lurker hopes the 2015 season builds on the HIU Men’s Soccer historic season that was 2014.  Last year, the HIU’s men’s soccer team claimed Hope International’s first ever GSAC regular season championship- in any sport.  On the strength of 13 returners and at least that many recruits, Coach Lurker hopes strength in numbers playing as one like 2014 is the key to their success in 2015.

Following a three year hiatus, Coach Lurker guided the Royals in 2014 to a record of 13-5-1 and an 8-2 GSAC record that secured the conference championship.  Both win totals represent the highest win mark for the Royals since they joined the GSAC in 1999.  The men produced a tough to duplicate streak of playing in six straight overtime games that resulted in a record of 4-1-1 which included wins against Vanguard, Biola, and San Diego Christian.  A 1-0 win at The Master’s was the first ever win for men’s soccer on the road in Santa Clarita.  Beating Arizona Christian 3-0 sealed the GSAC championship before the Royals saw their season abruptly end in the GSAC Semifinals.

For his efforts of getting the best out of all his players while playing as one unit, Coach Lurker was awarded the GSAC Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year.  Sean Toth was named the program’s first NAIA All-American.  Toth joined Jesse Sandoval and Jesse Perez on the All-GSAC team.

In the previous five year tenure of Coach Lurker (2006-10), the Royals were 37-51-7 but were 26-28-7 in the final three years.  The HIU men made two trips to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament in those five years.  Eight different players earned NCCAA All-American honors with six total earning All-GSAC honors.

The 2010 campaign- the previous end of the Lurker era- saw the Royals finish 11-10-1 and 5-4-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.  The Royals qualified for the GSAC playoffs for the first time ever in 2010.

The one match talked about the most still to this day from the early Lurker coaching years is a 1-0 win over then #2 Azusa Pacific back in 2006.

Even with being very proud of the accomplishments of his teams on the field, the one area of his previous coaching tenure that Coach Lurker is most proud of is his ongoing relationships with his former players.  He continues to enjoy regular contact with a number of HIU players/ alumni despite being away from the program for the three year period.

In his three years away from HIU, Coach Lurker has worked primarily on the administrative side of athletics, recreation, and fitness including working as the Director of Athletics at California Sports and Fit.

Educationally, Coach Lurker earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Biola University in May 2005.  He added a Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration from Concordia University (CA) in December 2007.  He is currently working on a teaching credential at Hope International University.

Coach Lurker and his wife, Emma, reside in Orange, CA.  They attend Friends Church in Orange, CA.
