FULLERTON, CA – (RV) Hope International hosted William Jessup on Saturday, Sept. 30 and came away with its fourth GSAC win in as many conference contests. The match required overtime to decide a final result, but in the end HIU was able to close the deal in extra time.

The Royals wasted no time in getting on the board after an early strike from Bacilio Hernandez put HIU up 1-0 over the Warriors. Pedro Mendoza carried the ball up the field and then moved out to the right before sending it back in for Hernandez along the end line – Hernandez finished the play straight on for the early lead.

Only a few minutes later, however, WJU netted an equalizer in the seventh minute with a ball played in from the left. The new 1-1 tie would hold for the next 13 minutes until the Royals pulled ahead once again.

After HIU earned a corner kick, Hernandez sent the ball into the box from the left wing and Shawn Dettmer notched the first goal of his senior season with a header on the near post for a 2-1 lead at 21'.

16 minutes after the Royals took the lead back from WJU, Hernandez added an insurance goal for the Royals after a bad pass by the Warriors set him up on the back line with a one-on-one against the keeper. A chip shot over a diving save attempt gave HIU a 3-0 lead with eight minutes remaining before halftime.

The Royals held on to their lead through the half and kept a 3-1 advantage until the 70th minute. A corner sent in turned into a goal after the Warriors' leading scorer finished the play with a header flicked in on the far post for a 3-2 tally.

The Warriors redoubled their effort after scoring their second goal and in the closing moments that effort paid off with the equalizer at 88'. An initial shot from a Jessup striker bounced off the Royals' right post and an unfortunate bounce for HIU landed at the feet of a second hard-charging Jessup player who finished the play with a straight-on shot for the 3-3 tie.

The match required overtime after neither side could net the decisive goal in the last two minutes of regulation and both sides also failed to find the net in the first overtime. With time winding down and the match heading towards a 3-3 draw, the Royals generated one more corner kick and made it count when the Warriors fouled HIU on the ensuing play.

Hernandez served the ball in from the right wing and Joel Palomares ended the match in the 106th minute. After Hernandez played the ball in from the wing, Palomares headed the ball passed the Jessup keeper for the game-winner.

HIU improves to 8-1-2 overall and 4-0 in GSAC play while the Warriors fall to 3-8-1 overall with an 0-4 showing against GSAC teams. The Royals are now 2-0-2 in overtime matches during their 2017 season and will head out on the road for their next several matches before returning home to host Vanguard on Oct. 14. William Jessup returns home to host the majority of their remaining season before playing the last regular-season match at Menlo.
