RIVERSIDE, CA – The Royals wrapped up their time at the La Sierra volleyball tournament with a match against a top NAIA opponent, No. 16 Cornerstone (MI). The Golden Eagles won the first two sets before HIU was able to rally and force three sets of extra volleyball to decide the match.

While HIU was unable to come away with a win against the Golden Eagles, history was made by Katie Landazuri in the third set after collecting her ninth kill of the match - with that ninth kill Landazuri tallied the 1000th kill of her career at HIU and became only the third Royal in program history to do so. Landazuri would finish the morning with a team-high 20 kills and now sits 145 kills back of the record with 1011 career kills, needing 146 to break the current career mark of 1156.

Cornerstone played its best volleyball to bookend the match with 14 kills in set one and an attack rate of .333 against the Royals, while HIU struggled out of the gate with 10 kills and a .028 attack rate as a team in set one. The Royals had only one more kill as a team than errors in the opener, resulting in a 25-18 win for Cornerstone.

HIU bounced back in the second set and fought harder, but the end result was the same. Cornerstone again had the edge in efficiency and total kills produced in the set, and HIU fell by three rallies to lose 25-22.

With their backs against the proverbial wall, HIU came out in set three and played a strong set against Cornerstone to keep the match alive. HIU sided out at a better rate and was more efficient on offense than Cornerstone in set three and built on that to win by five rallies, 25-20.

Cornerstone bounced back in set four and actually played a more efficient game statistically than HIU in the set, but HIU was able to hold on and grind out the win to force a fifth set with a chance for a third victory over a Top 25 NAIA program.

The Royals were unable to take advantage of their opportunity, however, and watched as the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone took control of the final set with their most efficient play of the day. HIU cashed in six rallies in the final set but could not hold off Cornerstone, as the Eagles stormed through the finish line to claim the match 15-6 in set five.

As menitoned earlier, Landazuri led HIU with 20 kills on 64 swings and also notched a double-double with 12 digs. Jessica Zieg collected a double-double as well with 54 assists and 15 digs while also tallying two aces and three blocks. Kierra Pearson and Natalie Hadder also picked up double-doubles in the loss by combining for 27 kills and 23 digs between themselves. Shea Beeman led the team with 24 digs.

Cornerstone was able to edge HIU on the block and from the service line to get the win. HIU falls to 5-2 overall with the loss and is now 2-1 against teams in the NAIA Top 25 during the 2017 season. The Royals return home for their next match on Thursday, Aug. 31 against La Sierra at 5:00 pm in the Darling Pavilion.
