FULLERTON, CA – The 2017 season is now underway for the Royals after HIU played in two matches at its Summer Slam tournament on Aug. 16. The Royals split the day at 1-1 with a win in their first match over Trinity Christian before falling in five to (RV) Northwest (WA).

In the first match of the day against Trinity Christian, Coach Jessica Walker's squad overcame a tough first set before cruising to a sweep of the Trolls in three. The Royals needed extra rallies to win 26-24 in set one, but steady improvement through the match allowed HIU to win 25-20 in set two and 25-18 in set three.

Katie Landazuri led all players with 17 kills (.290, 17-8-31) and made nine digs – one shy of a double-double - while also serving up four aces to help power the offense. Jessica Zieg ran her team's attack with 39 assists and got most of her production from pairing with Landazuri, Breanna Kirklen (eight kills), and Hallie Sullivan (seven kills). Shea Beeman led the Royals with 15 digs and Kirklen paired with Mikayla Derieg to lead with three blocks apiece.

The second match of the day started well for HIU as the Royals faced (RV) Northwest – after two sets HIU led 2-0 with wins of 25-23 in set one and 25-17 in set two. The Royals started to struggle in set three, bounced back in briefly in set four, and came out flat in the fifth. The Eagles of Northwest (WA) ran away with the deciding set early, and a late rally from HIU wasn't enough to make up for the sluggish start.

Landazuri led again with 18 kills and recorded her first double-double of the season after just missing earlier in the afternoon, notching 17 digs in the second match. Natalie Hadder, Maddie Barrett, and Derieg each provided nine kills for HIU, but the Royals' offense wasn't able to overcome some of the challenges Northwest offered at the net. The Eagles came up with 15 blocks in the match to the Royals' five and also produced more digs as a team. Beeman led HIU again with 32 digs, while Zieg and Hadder were also in double-digits for digs.

HIU will start day two of the Summer Slam 1-1 on the year with matchups against #11 Eastern Oregon and #14 Montana Tech on day two. Catch all the action live from our website, and check back for recaps afterwards on hiuroyals.com.
