The 2017 signees with Coach Lurker and his returning players

FULLERTON, CA – Hope International held its third annual Signing Day event on May 6, 2017 for its incoming class of athletes. The Royals have used this event to welcome new athletes into the university and introduce them to the Athletics department.

Coach Lurker brought seven new athletes to the 2017 Signing Day event along with some familiar faces that have not yet seen the field for HIU. Coach Lurker signed four new transfers – Isaac Garcia of Orange Coast College, William Rodriguez of Fullerton College, Kristian Saravia of Long Beach City College, and Alex Zuluaga of CSU Dominguez Hills – and also brought in four new freshmen – Rigo Lizardi of Godinez Fundamental HS, Carlos Guevara of Foothill HS, and two from Beaumont HS in Jose Hernandez and John Mejia.

Additionally, Coach Lurker invited several redshirts that missed the 2016 Signing Day event, including Noel Gonzalez, Pedro Mendoza, and Noah Stewart. Gonzalez played his high school soccer for Loara HS and has yet to play collegiately, while Mendoza and Stewart both come to HIU from Bristol University.

Coach Lurker also plans to add several new players and one returning redshirt that were unable to attend. Dylan Gallardo will be new to the program, while P. Mendoza's brother Steven Mendoza will return after redshirting in 2016.

The Royals made history in the 2016 season with their best start in the existence of the program, lasting 14 games without a loss (10-0-4) before finally tasting defeat in the 15th game of the season against Biola. Coach Lurker and the returning athletes will look to work the newcomers into their system and build on that success after also making their sixth GSAC playoff appearance in the last seven seasons.

HIU Athletics is proud to welcome these and all the other incoming athletes for the 2017-18 academic year – best of luck in your seasons and go Royals!
