FULLERTON, CA – Hope International hosted Arizona Christian on Friday, Apr. 21 for the Royals' final GSAC series of the 2017 season and took two from the Firestorm. The Royals won both in walkoff fashion after a late hit gave them a 5-4 win in game one and another gave them an 8-0 win in game two.

Coach Dennis Blas flipped his rotation and put Alejandra Guillen (SR/Downey, CA) in the circle to start game one – Guillen went the distance and allowed four runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and no walks issued.

The Royals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after Guillen, Crystal Cano (SR/Norwalk, CA), and Cynthia Martinez (SR/Montebello, CA) all got aboard with walks in the bottom of the first. An RBI walk for Jocelyn Young (SR/Reno, NV) plated Guillen and Jaslin Rivas (JR/La Mirada, CA) laced a single to center to score Cano and Martinez.

After batting through the lineup in the first Guillen led off the second and again drew a walk to get on. Justice Walker (JR/Huntington Beach, CA) followed with a walk as well before the Firestorm made a pitching change with two aboard and none out. Martinez singled to plate Guillen for the fourth run of the game and a 4-0 lead for HIU, but the Royals' offense stagnated after that.

ACU broke onto the board with a pair of runs in the fifth and tied the game with two more in the sixth but HIU was able to lock in against the Firestorm in the seventh to preserve the tie. With a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh, Martinez drew a walk and was replaced on the base path by Alyssa Nava (SR/Cerritos, CA) at first. A sacrifice bunt moved Nava to second and Young singled up the middle to get on base – a poor throw by the ACU center fielder allowed the winning run to come in as Nava made a good read and broke for home, winning 5-4 with a walkoff error by ACU.

Tori Franks (JR/Mesa, AZ) stood in the circle for HIU in game two and worked a shortened no-hitter for the Royals, tossing the second no-no of her career at HIU. Franks walked two and fanned five in the win, snapping a personal losing streak in the process as the Royals had struggled to win in several of her previous starts.

A scoreless first frame gave way to three runs by HIU in the second frame after Franks led off with a walk, moved on a single by Young, and took third after Jaslin Rivas loaded the bases with a bunt single. An RBI groundout plated Franks before Guillen lofted a double to left center for the 3-0 lead.

HIU added another in the fourth after Martinez was hit by a pitch and replaced by Jaiden Cornelius (FR/Camarillo, CA) on the bag. Cornelius took second after a Franks single, moved on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a sac fly to right field for the 4-0 lead.

A scoreless forth and top of the fifth led to the bottom of the fifth frame and the Royals would put an end to the day there. Martinez led off with a double and was joined on the base paths by Franks after she drew a walk. Alexis Sargent (FR/Torrance, CA) stood in for Martinez to pinch run and would come around with Franks to score on a two-RBI single from Ally Painter (JR/La Palma, CA). Destiney Fierro (JR/Ontario, CA) drew a walk to put two on base once again and Guillen singled to score Painter. Justice Walker then came to the plate and launched what would otherwise have been a triple to right field, but the winning run came in from third and Walker would end the game with what was scored as a walkoff single.

HIU won 8-0 to sweep the season series against ACU and will finish the GSAC slate of 2017 at .500, 12-12 on the year. HIU has two games remaining in the regular season with a doubleheader upcoming tomorrow afternoon against St. Katherine as the Royals celebrate Senior Day against the Firebirds.
