FULLERTON, CA – Hope International hosted Benedictine-Mesa (AZ) in its final match of the 2107 season and finished the year with a pair of wins against the Redhawks. The Royals got several standout performances from their departing seniors in the win and will now bid goodbye to their five seniors with the end of the academic year approaching.

Zach Greene (SR/Lombard, IL) and Enrique Lopez (SR/Santa Ana, CA) made it their mission to break the HIU single-game record for assists and kills generated by a setter-hitter tandem and that effort showed up early. Greene produced ten kills in the first set while hitting .300 and the Royals would win 25-23 in set one two jump in front early.

The hitting clinic continued in set two as Greene combined with Lopez to produce 11 kills for HIU while hitting .308 in the set – Greene also provided the Royals with a block and an ace in the first two sets to help his team win the second set 25-23 once again.

With the record within their grasp, Greene and Lopez continued to team up in the fourth set but Benedictine began to clue into the Royals' scheme and took advantage of the Royals' one-man show. The Redhawks were able to set up their defense exclusively to contain Greene in set three and defused his swings in the third, extending the match to four by winning 25-21 in set three.

With the record in hand, Coach Henry Valiente Jr. opened up the offense in set four and the Royals spread the ball around to their hitters on the floor to spread the Redhawks' defense out. Greene was able to benefit from the extra spacing and helped his team to a four-set win with a few extra rallies in the final stanza as HIU won 26-24 to close their season.

Greene capped his career with a 30-kill performance and added two assists, two aces, two blocks, and eight digs. Lopez dished out 49 assists, a match high, and Max Osmundson (SO/Las Vegas, NV) also came up with 12 kills and 14 digs for a double-double in the final game of 2017.

HIU finished the 2017 season with a two-win streak and a 13-12 overall record. HIU bids goodbye to five seniors with the conclusion of this season – Lopez, Greene, Daniel Deloney (SR/Sacramento, CA), Kevin Baran-Maguire (SR/Toronto, ONT, CAN), and Jared Shirai (SR/Honolulu, HI) have all played their final match for HIU with the final win of 2017.

Stay tuned for a full season recap in the coming weeks after the conclusion of the NAIA Invitational Tournament.
