FULLERTON, CA – Hope International hosted Concordia Irvine in a rematch of an earlier meeting in Irvine on Jan. 25. The Royals fell in straight sets in the first meeting of the season and were able to stretch the match out to five sets before falling at home to the Eagles in the fifth.

HIU tallied just five kills in set one and swung at a net .000 as a team on the attack with side out rate of 62% - CUI bettered HIU in every category in set one and would go on to win by two in a competitive opener that tilted the Eagles' direction by the end of the set.

Set two was also highly competitive and took eight extra rallies at the end to decide – the Eagles would come away victorious with a 29-27 final, but the Royals did their best to push back against the Eagles' size and set themselves up for another battle in set three.

The Royals trailed 20-15 in what looked like the final set of the night but rallied back to tie it 25-25 before cashing in on the extra rallies with a 28-26 win in set three. The third set was the first of the night where HIU managed to attack and side out at better rates than CUI and the Royals never lost their focus playing from behind to keep the match going into the fourth.

Another late rally again paid off for HIU in set four – after siding out 72% of the time, just one more time than CUI in the identical number of chances, the Royals took set four to force the final set with a 30-28 final in the fourth. Both teams were able to get their offenses humming in the fourth set as each hit .350 or better.

In the final set Concordia steadied itself and was able to jump out to an early 8-4 lead to flip the court and HIU never recovered from that initial deficit. The Royals had played focused for two straight sets to come from behind each time, but Concordia was able to capitalize on HIU miscues in set five. The Royals hit .000 as a team again in the final set and fell 15-9.

Nicolas Bilinski (SO/Placentia, CA) led HIU with 15 kills on offense and added 10 digs for his first double-double of the season. Zach Greene (SR/Lombard, IL) led HIU defensively with 23 digs and also tallied 13 kills and six blocks – three solo – to help his team stay competitive all night against their NCAA opponent. Greene's 23 digs smashes his previous career best of 10 in a game and is good enough for second all-time on the single-game records list at HIU. Jared Shirai (SR/Honolulu, HI) dished out 45 assists and Daniel Deloney (SR/Sacramento, CA) led HIU with two service aces.

HIU drops to .500 this season with a 10-10 overall record and will be in action again this weekend as they head north to face UC Merced. Links will be available at hiuroyals.com.
