FULLERTON, CA – Hope International hosted NCAA Division III UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 3:00 pm in the second game of a back-to-back against the Slugs. After taking UCSC to five sets the previous night, HIU fell in three straight on their home hardwood and lost the season series to UCSC, 0-2.

The Royals got five kills from Charles Belvin (JR/Long Beach, CA) in the opening set against the Slugs but hit just .176 as a team and would fall by five, 25-20, in the first game of the day. Santa Cruz outhit HIU and sided out more consistently than the Royals despite the higher number of blocks produced by HIU in the set.

HIU played the Slugs even closer in the second set after limiting the Slugs to their lowest attack percentage of the afternoon. HIU coupled that limited UCSC attack with its best offensive effort of the day but it wasn't enough to overcome the Slugs' advantage at the net – UCSC put up four more blocks than HIU for the slim advantage in the second set. While the Royals were able to get five kills each from Max Osmundson (SO/Las Vegas, NV) and Tyler Green, they were unable to close out the second set and fell 25-22.

The Slugs put the match away after a strong performance in set three to sweep their hosts – HIU hit its lowest percentage of the afternoon while UCSC performed its best and went on to win by eight rallies, 25-17. The Royals got four kills each from Osmundson and Nicolas Bilinski (SO/Placentia, CA) but could not catch the Slugs.

Osmundson led HIU with 12 kills on offense and added five digs to his line to help his teammates. Enrique Lopez (SR/Santa Ana, CA) dished 23 assists and Belvin led the Royals with three blocks – two solo – and seven digs on defense.

The Royals fall to 10-9 overall with the loss and drop the season series to the Slugs after losing both games on their home hardwood. HIU will be back on the court at home next Wednesday when they host the Concordia Irvine Eagles in a rematch of a Jan. 25 match that was played in Irvine.
