FULLERTON, CA – Hope International hosted NCAA Division III opponent UC Santa Cruz on Friday, Feb. 24 in the first game of a back-to-back against the Banana Slugs at the Darling Pavilion. HIU fell behind early and was able push the match to five sets in front of its home crowd before falling in the final set to the Slugs for the 2-3 loss.


HIU hit just .114 as a team in the first set and sided out at 58% against the Slugs while UCSC hit .324 and sided out at an impressive 72% rate to claim the opening set 25-21 against HIU. The Royals were able to stay competitive against their guests despite the low attack numbers but found themselves working from behind after the first set.

HIU was able to battle back in the second set and evened the match at 1-1 after a 25-23 tally favored the Royals at the end of set two. HIU was able to grind out the close win after limiting UCSC to an attack rate of .194 and a side out rate of 47%.

The Slugs rallied back to take another lead after winning set three 25-19 – the Royals hit just .147 in the set and sided out at only 50% against the Slugs as UCSC hit .400 as a team while siding out 64% of the time to keep the momentum on its side.

The Royals claimed set four to even it up again and force a fifth set with a 25-23 final tally despite being outhit by the Slugs in the fourth set. Neither side was able to side out particularly well in the fourth set and the Royals managed to eke out the win.

After managing to force the extra set the Royals ran out of gas in the final fame – UCSC hit .700 as a team without an error and sided out at 100%, a perfect five for five against HIU. The Royals hit in the negative as a team and sided out below 30% as a team in the 15-4 loss that gave UCSC the win in the match.

Charles Belvin (JR/Long Beach, CA) led HIU with 13 kills and added nine digs and two blocks in the loss. Enrique Lopez (SR/Santa Ana, CA) tallied 39 assists, two aces, four digs, and three blocks for HIU and Vinny Parisi (SO/Yorba Linda, CA) led the team with 10 digs.

HIU falls to 10-8 overall and will have a chance to even the season series tomorrow with a rematch against the Slugs at 3:00 pm in the Darling Pavilion – links to live coverage will be available on our website.
