THOUSAND OAKS, CA – Hope International traveled to face another NCAA Division III opponent on Thursday, Feb. 16 when they faced California Lutheran. The Royals needed extra rallies and four sets but they were able to knock off their hosts for their 10th win of the season.

The Royals fell to their hosts in the first set after putting together an attack percentage of just .029 and siding out only 54% of the time – CLU was able to side out 73% of the time and posted a .267 attack percentage on its way to a 25-18 win over the visiting Royals in set one.

It took extra rallies in the second set, but HIU was able to defeat their hosts after out-attacking and siding out at a higher rate. The Royals sided out almost 70% of the time to keep up the pressure and after four extra rallied came away with a match-tying win in set two, 27-25.

The Royals kept pressing their advantage in set three and again posted better attack and side out percentages than their hosts – the Royals' attack percentage of .368 and side out rate of 77% were their best numbers of the night and helped power them to a 25-22 win in set three.

Now firmly in control of the match with the momentum on their side, the Royals again turned in better numbers than their hosts and finished the match off in the fourth with a 25-18 win. HIU produced five more kills than their hosts in the final set and were more efficient to secure the seven-point win.

Zach Greene (SR/Lombard, IL) led the Royals again both offensively and defensively with another double-double – his 17 kills and 16 digs were team highs in both categories. Tyler Greene (FR/Lombard, IL) tallied 16 kills, Nicolas Bilinski (SO/Placentia, CA) added 15, and Kevin Baran-Maguire (SR/Toronto, ONT, CAN) tallied 10 kills as the fourth Royal in double figures offensively. Jared Shirai (SR/Honolulu, HI) posted a double-double with a match-high 47 assists and also supplied 10 digs and three blocks. Chase Larson (FR/Henderson, NV) led HIU with six blocks.

The Royals will play three matches at home with a pair of tilts against UC Santa Cruz and one match against Concordia Irvine before heading out on the road again for a pair of matches at UC Merced.
