SAN DIEGO, CA – Hope International is still looking for its first conference win after a second loss to San Diego Christian on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Grossmont College. The Royals were swept in the season series with the Hawks with the loss for the first time since the 2012-13 season – prior to this year's series the Royals were 6-0 against the Hawks after the 2012-13 season.

Sydney Lopez (JR/Buena Park, CA) led the way for HIU in a losing effort with 14 points on 50% shooting from the field and three rebounds, a block, and an assist coming off the bench for HIU.

The Royals scored first and hung close to the hometown Hawks in the first quarter, only trailing by five after the first period, 12-17. The second quarter was less friendly to the Royals and at the half HIU found itself facing a 34-19 deficit after allowing SDC to shoot 50% from the field with six made triples.

Coach Bill Crammer changed his lineup for the start of the second half and his team surged offensively with 20 points in the period, but the scoring burst wasn't enough to catch SDC. A fourth quarter that mirrored the first – a 17-12 tally favoring SDC – sank any hopes of a comeback and resulted in the 79-51 final for HIU.

Coulter Bowlen (JR/Port Jefferson Station, NY) was the other Royal to score in double figures for HIU – Bowlen finished with 10 points on 50% shooting from the field and dished three assists during the game. HIU shared the ball better in this loss to SDC compared to the previous meeting but allowed the Hawks to shoot 18% better from the floor, resulting in their tenth GSAC loss of the year.

HIU is now 5-15 overall and 0-10 in conference – they play their second-to-last home game on Thursday, Feb. 9, against #21 The Master's before heading out on the road again to face #5 Vanguard in Costa Mesa on Saturday, Feb. 11.
