DES MOINES, IA – No. 10 Hope International split in its last day at the Grand View (IA) Molten Invitational, winning in three against Morningside (IA) to start the day before falling to the No. 1 Grand View Vikings.

The Royals swept through Morningside with double-digit performances by Tyler Greene (FR/Lombard, IL), Nicolas Bilinski (SO/Placentia, CA), and Dustin Elliott (FR/Las Vegas, NV). Elliott led all players with 14 kills and T. Greene was right behind with 12 while N. Bilinski added 10. The Royals finished the sweep with set scores of 25-22, 25-18, and 26-24 in the final frame to wrap up the match in three. Jared Shirai (SR/Honolulu, HI) tallied 22 assists to lead HIU and Enrique Lopez (SR/Santa Ana, CA) added 15 assists with a solo block.

The Royals got their toughest test last with a tilt against the hosting Vikings minutes after sweeping the Morningside squad. HIU got off to a good start with a 25-21 win in the first set, but the No. 1 Vikings were able to rally on their home court and won in four with scores of 22-25, 16-25, and 16-25 in the last three sets. Lopez dished 39 assists in the loss and piled up five digs as well en route to being named an All-Tournament player at the Invite.

HIU got three double-digit performances again in the loss to the No. 1 team in the NAIA – Max Osmundson (SO/Las Vegas, NV) and Chase Larson (FR/Henderson, NV) tallied ten kills apiece and Zach Greene (SR/Lombard, IL) led HIU with 11. Shirai led HIU with nine digs in the losing effort to their hosts.

The Royals move to 9-5 overall with the split result on the last day of the Invite and wrapped up the Iowa trip with a 5-1 record, three wins against top NAIA teams, and an All-Tournament selection in Lopez. The Royals will stay on the road for two tilts against Benedictine-Mesa (AZ) next weekend – HIU will not play at home again until UC Santa Cruz comes to town on Feb. 24.
