SAN DIEGO, CA – Hope International hit the road again on Saturday, Jan. 28 for its third away game of the 2017 season. The Royals started strong against the NCAA DII Tritons of UCSD, but some last-minute heroics from the home team kept HIU from collecting its fifth win of the season and the Royals fell in five.

Max Osmundson (SO/Las Vegas, NV) turned in one of his best performances of the season with 19 kills against the tough MPSF Tritons, matching his career high set against Vassar (NY) earlier this season. Osmundson also added a pair of aces, five digs, and a block to his line in the loss.

The Royals sided out more often and outhit their hosts in the opening set en route to a 25-23 win in the first game of the night. Osmundson exploded for seven kills and only one error in the first to lead the offense as HIU hit .257 as a team in the close win over UCSD to start.

Everything that went well in the first set for HIU took a turn for the worse in the second as UCSD woke up and sided out at an incredible 86% against the Royals – HIU hit negative in the frame and two HIU attackers produced more errors than kills as UCSD won the second set 25-15.

The Royals forced the issue in the third with a .444 attack percentage and a side out rate of 80% - Charles Belvin (JR/Long Beach, CA) and Nicolas Bilinski (SO/Placentia, CA) tallied four kills apiece with no errors and the Royals were able to beat their hosts 25-20 in the third. HIU only committed a single attack error in the third set as a team in the win.

The Royals came within three swings of the match in the fourth set, but UCSD outlasted HIU thanks to better hitting as a team – both sides were able to side out at roughly the same rate but HIU's five errors and only nine kills were not enough to close the match. Belvin and Osmundson added three kills apiece and Tyler Michael (SO/Whittier, CA) put up three blocks in the losing effort, sending the match to the fifth set after a 25-22 final went the way of the Tritons.

Osmundson added four kills in six swings with a block and a dig in the final set, but UCSD would not be denied on its home court. The Royals were able to force extra rallies but fell 16-14 in the final set in San Diego, falling to 4-4 overall in the process. Enrique Lopez (SR/Santa Ana, CA) dealt 44 assists, Belvin and Bilinski tallied 10 kills each, and Michael led HIU with five blocks during the night.

HIU will travel next week to the Molten Invitational in Des Moines, IA hosted by Grand View for six matches against NAIA teams. Stay tuned to our website for more updates, recaps, and coverage options.
