ATHERTON, CA – Hope International finished the regular season on the road at Menlo College on Saturday, October 29, at 3:00 pm. The Royals were playing for a shot at the number two seed in the GSAC Tournament and a first round bye, but the Oaks had other plans.

Juan Gutierrez scored the first goal of the match after Menlo committed a foul in the box at 13'. Gutierrez stepped up to the dot and netted his fifth goal of the season on the PK opportunity. The Royals nearly made it to halftime with the lead but the Oaks snuck one passed Manuel Madrigal at 39' – a foul by HIU set up the opportunity and the Oaks capitalized for an equalizer.

At the break Menlo already had established a lead in the shot count and that shot continued to grow in the second period of regulation. Both sides had chances in the second period but neither was able to net a game-winner so the match headed to extra time.

In the first overtime period Menlo took the only shot during the initial ten minutes, so the match headed to a second extra period. The Royals made it within four minutes of their fifth draw of the year but a golden goal made its way into the net passed Madrigal at 106:13, giving the Oaks a 1-2 win and a share of the GSAC regular season championship.

The Royals drop to fourth in the GSAC standings with the loss after finishing the regular season with an 11-3-4 overall record and a 5-3-2 GSAC record. The 0-2 showing in Northern California cost HIU a first-round bye but the Royals advance to the postseason for the second straight season.

HIU plays host to The Master's in the opening round of the GSAC Tournament next weekend at Fullerton College – stay tuned to our website for the official game time in the coming days. Should the Royals win out against the Mustangs they will advance to the GSAC Semifinals hosted by Biola.
