AVONDALE, LA – The Royals traveled to Louisiana for the Battle on the Bayou hosted by Sterling College (KS) to open their 2016-17 golf season at the TPC Avondale course. Clarence DeVera (JR/Long Beach, CA) picked up where he left off in the 2015-16 season and came in first for the Royals, finishing eighth overall in a field of 38 individuals.

DeVera finished the first day of the tournament tied for sixth after shooting rounds of 74 and 76 and making par on 23 holes. Christian Skinner (SO/Long Beach, CA) and newcomer Erick Liscio (JR/Temecula, CA) finished up the first day tied with each other for 15th overall – Skinner shot 75 in round one and 80 in round two while Liscio turned in a card with 80 in round one and 75 in round two.

Justin Cosca (JR/Buena Park, CA) ended the first day in a tie for 28th with a card of 82 in round one and 80 in round two. Newcomer Alec Carlson (FR/Riverside, CA) turned in two rounds of 89 in his first day of collegiate competition and found himself in 35th at the end of the day.

DeVera, Liscio, and Skinner all made five birdies during the first two rounds at the tournament - DeVera led the Royals with 23 times making par and Skinner was second with 19 holes par'd on the day.

After two rounds Liscio led HIU on par three holes by averaging exactly par, DeVera played the best for HIU on par four holes by finishing two over par, and Skinner performed best for all HIU golfers on par five holes by finishing two under.

On day two DeVera finished up the tournament with another round of 76 for a final card of 226 at 10 over par and eighth place in the field of 38. Liscio turned in a card of 80 in his final round for a total of 235 to put him in a tie for 20th.

Cosca continued his steady improvement and shot a 76 in his final round for a total card of 238, tying him for 23rd. Skinner shot an 85 in his final round for a final tally of 240 and tied him for 27th. Carlson ended his first collegiate tournament with a round of 88 on the last day for a total of 266 strokes and 36th place.

The Royals will be back on the golf course to compete at the Embry-Riddle (AZ) Invitational at the Talking Rock Golf Club in two weeks on Oct. 16-18. HIU has four events lined up for its fall season this year – the final two will be the CSU San Marcos Classic and the Arizona Christian Fall Invitational.
