Siena Rivera and Brian Tressler were the first finishers for HIU at the Mark Covert Classic

BREA, CA – Hope International kicked off its 2016 cross country season at the Mark Covert Classic hosted by CSU Fullerton on Saturday, Sept. 3 in Carbon Canyon. The Royals were unable to field enough runners for a team score but had good individual success in their first race of the season.

On the women's side HIU put Siena Rivera (JR/Kingsburg, CA) and Ronda Ackley (SR/Hemet, CA) in the field of 88 runners to compete in the 5K. With only two runners competing the Royals were unable to place as a team but Rivera was able to finish with a time of 20:52.8 as the 42nd runner through the tape. Ronda Ackley came across at 24:13.3 as the 75th to finish.

On the men's side the Royals also struggled to put healthy runners on the course but it would be a historic day regardless. Brian Tressler (SR/Lake Forest, CA) was one of two Royals to race and finished 16th in a field of 160. His time of 25:58.8 in the 8K was both a new personal best and broke the HIU school record of 26:12.1 set in 2013.

Justin Torres (JR/Alhambra, CA) also ran for the men and placed 79th individually with a time of 27:57.6. Newcomer Torres made his debut at the Classic and ensured that both Royals' runners finished in the top half of the field.

The Royals compete again in two weeks at the UC Riverside Invitational hosted at the OPS course on Sept. 17. The men will race at 8:05 AM and the women will start at 8:45 AM.
