NIPOMO, CA – The Royals played in the Smith Motors Invitational hosted by the Belhaven University Blazers on Tuesday, Mar. 8. Clarence DeVera (SO/Long Beach, CA) led the Royals at the tournament with an individual finish of 146 (69 and 77) on a rainy day in Nipomo.

DeVera placed fourth overall with his card of 146 in a field of 22 players that qualified for a final tally. After tying for the best score in round one, DeVera struggled in the second 18 holes and finished just out of the top three.

Jeffrey Holsman (FR/Moreno Valley, CA) finished with a final score of 160 on a rainy day in Nipomo, CA after shooting 78 in round one and 82 in the second round and finished 15th.

Garrett Groom (SR/Villa Park, CA) shot an 85 in round one and shaved eight strokes in the second round, shooting 77 in the second time around the greens for a 162 final card and was just behind Holsman in 16th.

Grant von Kanel (SO/Redondo Beach, CA) played as an individual and was the final Royal to finish both rounds, ending his day with a card of 169. von Kanel showed the most improvement from round to round, shooting an 89 in the first and an 80 in the second go-round.

The trio of Christian Skinner (FR/Long Beach, CA), Justin Cosca (SO/Buena Park, CA), and Keith Flowers did not finish both rounds and because of that the Royals failed to qualify for a team score.

The men of HIU will travel to Riverside, CA in two weeks for the Cal Baptist Men's Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 21 & 22.
